The Challenge
Translate Domain Name System resolution, an abstract piece of internet infrastructure, into a concept understandable to readers without a networking background.
The Solution
A sustained GPS metaphor running across the article and the illustrations. Each technical concept maps to a familiar GPS behavior: name resolution becomes street-name lookup, DNS zones become navigation regions, recursive and iterative queries become two different ways of asking for directions. The illustrations make the comparison structural rather than incidental.
Impact
Published in Tech Jobs Academy on Medium, the publication of an intensive 16-week technical training program preparing New Yorkers for cloud and server administration roles. Used as a reference piece in onboarding materials.
The metaphor
DNS servers turn human-readable names like nytimes.com into machine-readable IP addresses like 170.149.161.130. The article frames this as the same job a GPS does: take a name a person can remember, return a coordinate a machine can act on. Once that frame is set, every other DNS concept in the article can be hung off it without restating the underlying networking jargon.
