The Challenge
Version one animated thousands of individual DOM elements, one per letter. It worked, and it brought heavy pages to a crawl. Melting the graphics as well as the text meant the naive approach would not scale at all.
The Solution
A rebuild around a single fixed canvas. Letters and particles render on one draw surface instead of thousands of nodes, while images, buttons, cards and navigation warp through shared SVG displacement filters. Quality levels and chaos controls let the effect scale to the page and the machine.
Impact
Published free on the Chrome Web Store. The extension requests only activeTab and scripting, holds no host permissions, makes no network requests, and collects nothing.
Building the extension
DALI-FY is a Manifest V3 Chrome extension that runs only on the tab you click, with activeTab and scripting permissions and no host permissions at all. Nothing is collected and no request leaves the browser.
The first version detached every character into its own DOM element and animated them individually. On a dense page that is tens of thousands of nodes under continuous layout, and it showed. Version two moves letters and particles onto a single fixed canvas, so the cost stops scaling with the word count, and melts the page graphics separately through shared SVG displacement filters. Images, buttons, cards and headers sag and drip without ever leaving the document.
Built in collaboration with Claude Opus 5 from Anthropic and GPT-5.6 Sol from OpenAI.
The commercial
Everyone is an artist. Everyone uses tools.
Making the commercial
The cast and key shots were rendered with GPT Image 2, then animated with Seedance 2.0 image-to-video, with narration from ElevenLabs. The argument the spot makes is the one the extension makes: every artist has always used a tool, so pick one and go.
The melting shown on screen is the extension running on real pages, captured live rather than simulated.
