Concept
At center, a colossal half-formed apple rests on a cracked stone plinth. Its lower half is a gilded bowl with metallic gold pooling down the sides. Its upper half is an open cage of curved metal ribs, and within those ribs are human bodies tangled inside the fruit. The apple is the symbol of reward, prosperity, the American promise, and it is being built out of the dead.
To the lower left, a small hooded figure sprays gold onto the apple from a primitive canister. To the right, a massive tracked industrial machine arcs a long jointed arm overhead, lowering a metal spire into the open top of the apple to screw it in as the stem. A second operator rides a lift platform built into the arm itself, gripping the controls. Both figures sit on opposite sides of the same system. Neither owns the apple. Both are servicing it.
Graphite, ink, and metallic gold rendered together create the central tension of the piece: the precious and the industrial, the promised and the produced, sharing the same frame. The saturated red background strips away environment and lets the scene read as a stage, a poster, a thesis.
